Multiple people dead in California bar shooting

(WOWO News)

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (WOWO): Authorities say 13 people are dead after a shooting inside a Southern California bar late Wednesday.

The dead include a Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputy, Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran of the force, who responded to the scene. Helus was shot as he entered the bar and died at an area hospital. The gunman is also dead.

Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Garo Kuredjian told the Associated Press the first reports of shots fired came around 11:20 p.m. at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, which is about 40 miles west of Los Angeles.

The bar’s website says its hosts “College Country Night” every Wednesday. Police said hundreds were inside when the shooting occurred. Police could not confirm reports that the shooter used smoke grenades to distract the victims.
