American Crime Story - the American true crime anthology television series - has returned to our screens.

After the success of its first reason, subtitled The People v OJ Simpson, the show headed back to BBC Two on Wednesday night.

This series, subtitled The Assassination of Gianni Versace, explores the murder of designer Gianni Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan, based on Maureen Orth's book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U. S. History.

The series is broadcast on the cable television channel FX in the US.

A third season, based on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and a fourth season, based on the Clinton–Lewinsky scandal, are in development.

This current season on BBC examines the July 1997 assassination of legendary fashion designer Gianni Versace (Édgar Ramírez) by sociopathic serial killer Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss), who killed himself in a Miami Beach houseboat after a manhunt that lasted eight days.

The season also stars Ricky Martin as Antonio D'Amico and Penélope Cruz as Donatella Versace.

On the morning of July 15, 1997, fashion designer Gianni Versace is shot and killed outside his Miami Beach mansion by wanted spree killer Andrew Cunanan.

Seven years earlier, Cunanan meets Versace at a gay nightclub in San Francisco and tells his roommates about the encounter the following morning, albeit with most of the details fabricated.

Cunanan later attends a performance of Capriccio as Versace's guest and exchanges origin stories with him after the performance.

In the present, Cunanan flees the scene, evading Versace's partner Antonio D'Amico.

Versace, meanwhile, is rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead.

As Miami Beach Police works with the FBI, Versace's sister Donatella and brother Santo begin planning the future of Versace's business while Cunanan purchases multiple newspapers covering Versace's death with a remorseless expression.

The nine-episode second season of American Crime Story received positive reviews from critics.

The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes gave the season an approval rating of 84% based on 68 reviews, with an average rating of 6.98/10.

The site's critical consensus reads, "The Assassination of Versace starts with a bang and unfurls slowly, moving backward through an intricate (and occasionally convoluted) murder mystery anchored by a career-defining performance from Darren Criss."

On Metacritic, the season has a score of 74 out of 100, based on 35 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews."

In January 2018, the Versace family released a statement criticizing the series.

They explained they have "neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever" in the production of the season, before adding that it "should only be considered as a work of fiction."
