I'm fairly certain I've used this headline before. An old friend used to ask this question when we had reached a logical end to our discussions without really solving anything or having a good conclusion.
That's exactly where I believe we are today.
A few weeks ago we witnessed politics at its worst. Expecting unvarnished truth to come out of a hearing in our federal government is pretty much wishful thinking. Hoping that reason and decorum will prevail in discourse from either side appears fruitless.
Sexual assault or rape should absolutely disqualify anyone from an elected or appointed public office - the presidency, Congress, the courts and others. And since someone who is accused of one of those would be disqualified, the determination of guilt must be unassailable.
A congressional hearing is neither a court of law nor a court of public opinion, but with so many lawyers holding office, many procedures parallel legal proceedings. Beyond the procedures, the tactics of some senators and the timing of leaked documents coupled with the backroom intrigues that occurred this time added the impression of a level of collusion that was supposed to have occurred between the president and some Russians in our last election.

It only makes sense to report crimes immediately so they can be properly dealt with by the courts.
Two people's lives are now permanently tainted. Justice Kavanaugh will always have the cloud of suspicion over his head - and that may affect the rest of the Supreme Court in the future. There is no doubt Dr. Ford experienced a sexual assault; but there wasn't any corroborated testimony that Brett Kavanaugh was the one who assaulted her. I believe she was purposefully manipulated by more than a few Democrat supporters and politicians, and now she is a piece of used tissue because she didn't deliver the knockout blow they wanted.
Following the hearings, crowds of people protested the outcome. The FBI investigation couldn't produce a smoking gun. That didn't make any difference to far too many people whose minds were made up even before the contents of Dr. Ford's letter were available. As far as some women are concerned, an accusation is sufficient - unless you're Bill Clinton and have James Carville in charge of handling "bimbo eruptions."
If you listen to Democratic politicians and uber-feminists, this is just more evidence of all men being predators and potential rapists. Dividing men and women as effectively as Democrats and Republicans are currently divided is in no one's interest except for those who are currently working to destroy our democratic republic and replace it with socialism, one piece at a time.
Back to my initial point - why are so many of us convinced that the congressional hearings were nothing more than an attempt to gain political advantage and leverage over the outcome of the midterm elections?
The day the courts of public opinion prevail in our decision-making process instead of courts of law, we will be in for a really rough ride. If I were you, I'd strap in tight for the next few weeks.
Well, that's the way I see it.
