FBI, DEA Raid Local Pain Management Company

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The FBI and DEA led a raid of a Baltimore County pain management company Tuesday morning.

Rosen-Hoffberg Rehabilitation and Pain Management Associates in Towson was raided for possible illegal activity.

The Baltimore County Police Department assisted with the raid, but it was led by the FBI and DEA. Two Department of Health and Human Services special agents were also at the facility.

According to the DEA, two search warrants were executed at the Towson location as well as one in Owings Mills.

Authorities say the investigation is for possible fraud or prescription pill abuse.

"We are looking for health care fraud, probably over-prescribing of opioids. Like I said before, no one is under arrest and no one is under indictment," said Todd Edwards of the DEA.

The DEA said that patients who showed up at the offices on Tuesday were given numbers for other medical facilities, because the clinics were closed during the raid.

In a separate case, Baltimore City filed a lawsuit against the same clinic and other major drug manufacturers and distributors last month.

The lawsuit alleges that the companies "bear significant responsibility" for the drug epidemic that has killed many people.

"And I should mention that we also have local defendants who we allege operated as a pill mill that exacerbated the problems that manufacturers and distributors created," Baltimore City solicitor Andre Davis said on Jan. 31.

After more than 60 agents raided both offices, the DEA said the timing, just a month after Baltimore's lawsuit against the clinic, is a coincidence.

"What we were doing today has nothing to do with the lawsuit that was filed by the Baltimore City solicitor. They are two separate investigations," Edwards said.

The DEA says the offices that were raided could re-open Wednesday because no one is under arrest.

The DEA also says it could take months for them to complete the investigation.
